Transfiguration of the Lord

Based upon a 15th century image by the great Theophanes the Greek, master iconographer and colleague of Andrei Rublev, this panel shows the moment of Mt. Tabor when the Lord was transfigured in front of the apostles Peter, James and John. While the three apostles react in varied forms of fear and shock in the lower (earthly) realm, the Lord (in dazzling white garments) serenely and majestically engages in conversation with the prophets Elijah (l) and Moses (r) in the upper (heavenly) realm.
